This summer I had the opportunity to take part in the internship and professional development meetings that Memphis Music Initiative provided for me and many other students through MMI Works. Although this was a way to get job experience for the first time, it wasn’t the only thing I was able to get out of being part of this summer program.
MMI Works was able to push me out of my comfort zone in a good way and thus make new friends and connections with people who have the same interests as me even if they have a completely opposite personality from mine. Not only that, but with this entire group of students, we were able to set norms to live by throughout the entire program along with taking them with us outside the program. These norms were things like keeping an open mind, being accepting that no one is perfect, and encouraging others to have more confidence and be better overall. Also, seeing as we struggled as a group to follow the norm of sharing the floor respectfully, I could say that everyone as a whole has improved on following that norm better now that we have come to the end of this summer program.
Not only did we set norms for us students to follow as a whole group, but we also worked on establishing a focus on what our main values are in life. I know for a fact I was able to find and settle through one of the professional development meetings that my most important life values were balance, dedication, compassion, harmony, truth, and love. Thanks to that discovery I was able to make at MMI, I now have a better idea of what i want to do job-wise that won’t ever interfere with or take away my values along my life journey.
Along with learning lots of new things through the weekly Wednesday professional development meetings, I also learned a lot from being placed to intern at the nonprofit organization that is the Orpheum Theatre. I’m still very happy that I got placed to intern here because I’ve always loved the Orpheum and overall anything having to do with theater. I strongly believe and feel that being placed to be a marketing intern here was one of the greatest internship opportunities anyone my age could ever have. I was able to get so many different types of experience, from creating Word documents, to writing radio spots, and to even learning how to do video and photography. The reason why I was able to get so many different types of job experience through this one internship at the Orpheum was because my supervisor, Christina, was always so considerate and mindful on all the areas I was interested in. She always remembered my interests and goals even though she wasn’t obligated to. Therefore she made sure I got at least my feet wet with job tasks in all the areas she saw fit that would fulfill my interests.
I can say I am truly satisfied with my experience with MMI Works this summer. Sure, some workdays got tiring and made me wish it was all over, but that also helped me realize what the adult life would be like at times and how I can start preparing for it now. Sure, the food we students were fed at the professional development meetings was good along with getting paid. However, I think I am more glad and thankful for all the job experience I was able to get along with the life lessons, norms, and values MMI has given to me and to everyone else who has ever taken part of this program.
