I have attended schools with many students who each year had the opportunity to travel overseas, whether to visit family and friends, or their families were just going on a vacation. I have always wished that I could visit other places and countries. Now with an opportunity with MMI Works I will finally get the chance to visit another country: Ireland! There is no way that I would be able to afford this without MMI.

My plans for college are to attend the University of Memphis and major in stage management. This past summer I was fortunate to be one of the first high school students to be a part of the internship through MMI Works and the Levitt Shell here in Memphis.  I worked with the sound engineer at the Levitt Shell where I learned all about audio, the proper way to handle the equipment, the sound board, and more. It was an amazing experience. This month I worked with the production of Hamlet for the New Moon Theatre Company at Theatre Works. I worked as the Stage Manager and Sound Engineer.

Now through Memphis Music Initiative I get to go to Ireland!

I have never flown before and I cannot wait to board an airplane and fly off to Ireland. We will spend approximately two weeks learning, working and of course having a great time. I know it will be an exciting experience. I look forward to spending this time with the wonderful people I have bonded with through MMI and the Levitt Shell. I look forward to continuing to learn about the arts.

I am excited to have this opportunity to travel to Ireland and participate in the Walled City Festival. There I would have the opportunity to compare how they set up for concerts versus how it is done here or if there is any difference. I will now be able to say that I have had the experience of going overseas and meeting people from another culture, and I am thrilled to be able to visit and meet people from there. I cannot wait to get back and share all that I have seen, heard and done with family and friends.

The staff at Memphis Music Initiative are wonderful people who have taught and share so much with me already, words cannot express my gratitude for this opportunity to travel with them to experience even more. Thank you to MMI Works program coordinator Brittney Bullock, and the entire staff of Memphis Music Initiative.
